As kids, we were always thinking of ways to make a few legitimate dollars. Once the snow was gone and Spring rolled around, we sold fresh flowers door-to-door. Tulips were usually the flower of choice because they were easy to come by. We would pick them from the yard of an old, abandoned, two-story gray house that was a block away from our block. We figured nobody would miss them.
Going door to door for sales was an endeavor. We knew what neighbors were most likely to support our business and who probably wouldn’t even open the door to us. I have to say that success was always ours! There were rarely any leftover flowers, and we made money for candy, soda and small trinkets. It was a lot of fun, and we learned salesmanship, teamwork, leadership skills, and a bit of Math along the way.
It’s that time of year right now when I can’t pass tulips without thinking about our days as salesmen. What fun we had!
